2023 Annual qrp report
RENO QRP SLOW SPEED NET 2023 ANNUAL REORT
The first Reno QRP Slow Speed CW began on June 4, 2018, after the devastating hurricane That hit Puerto Rico years ago. The island was hit so hard that all communications were down, and needed resources were at a standstill.
The Reno QRP Group felt that the grid could go down here just as easily. The members looked to SOTA as an example, they had light weight equipment, and could have a station up and running in a matter of minutes. This led to the beginning of the slow speed CW NET. The NET had three objectives.
1.Get OP’s on the air using CW.
2.Install confidence in OP’s that were rusty or never operated CW, the NET would be a safe place to begin.
3.Encourage OP’s to operate in the field using low power, by doing this a person could provide emergency communication if the grid was down. Also they may find it a lot of fun setting up a station and operating in the field.
When weather conditions are favorable, I operate at Hidden Valley Park about 400 feet above the valley floor where the noise level is S2.5. Out of 25 NET sessions I had to operate at home one time because of the weather.
When I operate in the field at Hidden Valley Park, my set up is the EFHW inverted “L” using two masts with the KX3 at 10 watts. The EFHW inverted “L” wire is 66 ft long and fed using a 46:1 transformer at the bottom of the main mast a 30 ft fiberglass extension pole is tied to a road marker. The other mast is a 26 ft painter pole tied on a signpost raising the far end of the wire.

Hi all;
The log of our last slow speed NET on MARCH 6, 2025 is attached.
The NET was held from MY HOME IN RENO, NV. Too cold and windy at Hidden Valley today. The weather being cloudy cold and windy.
The NET started at 11:00 AM on time at 7.045.50 MHZ. The noise level was about S4 today SFI 157 A index 13 K index 0 Xray C1.0
There were 8 QNI today Mike WA6ARA, Woody K1LB I/O, Krystal AJ6GC I/O, Bob KA6NSN, Chris AF7MP I/O, Derek W7DLZ, Roy W7HJL, Rob KA6JLY. Also, Joe KM6HJP, and Dave KI7SJE who tried to QNI but were not heard. I will give them credit for QNI.
First up was Mike from Ridgecrest, CA nice strong signal at 589 he was using his KX3 at ten watts into his 80 MTR Doublet. Mike reported the weather was 59 degrees F and windy.
Next was Bob from Quincy, CA he was 589 to me using his FT 757 at ten watts into his COBRA up 20 ft. Bob’s weather report was there was snow on the ground with a temp of 37 degrees f Bob had QSB and QRN today but he did very well regardless of the interference.
Next up was Derek form home in Lemmon Valley just north of Reno he was using his FT DX 10 at ten watts into his doublet antenna.
He said the weather was chilly cloudy temp about 45F.
Roy was next from Walla Walla, WA The weather there was freezing in the morning but warmed to 40 degrees and clear using his K3 at 15 watts his RST was 569 to me.
Rob was next but he had a problem with his paddle and copy was poor, at last call Rob told what the problem was. He also told me that he has been working on our new WEB page and near finished.
The NET was closed at 11:51 AM.
The next NET will be March 20, 2025. Starting at 11:00 AM. On 7.045 MHZ.
After the NET a e-mail to me from Dave KI7SJE
Ed,
Set up on a Little League bleacher because tables and benches haven’t been restored yet to Lions Park. I could hear you ok on 7045.5 though signals were weak, except for Roy of course. The whip on the KH1+ 40 meter extender tuned up to 1.6 swr but evidently couldn’t get a signal into Reno. I tried to join right after your last call but cutoff after someone outside the net called you.
Dave KI7SJE.
